Further Information from the CCAA

Arthritis Care

Arthritis Care is the only national voluntary organisation working with all people with arthritis. It operates over 600 local branches and groups and provides a wide range of services including a quarterly magazine, information counselling, publications on diet, exercise, pain management and other topics, self-management courses and holidays for all age groups, including families.

Young Arthritis Care is a self-help support group run for all young people with arthritis – anyone up to the age of 45. It has a National Committee made up of young people with arthritis. It has a nationwide network of contacts consisting of young people with arthritis or parents of children with arthritis who help, support and advise others in similar situations to their own. There are local groups around the country which allow members to get together, share information and give each other support. Various publications are available on request, including a regular magazine and a Ruff Guide for young people with arthritis.

Projects currently running are Personal Development Programmes for young people and Positive Future Workshops for teenagers. These weekend residential courses are aimed at sharing experiences with others and building confidence.

All Arthritis Care and Young Arthritis Cares work is aimed at promoting self-help and independence, and empowering young people with arthritis to live positive lives.

Scottish Network for Arthritis in Children

The aim of SNAC is to provide a national support network for children with arthritis and their families through the provision of factual, practical and emotional support. It aims to pull together the wider community of affected children in Scotland as well as raise public awareness of childhood arthritis.

CCAA

The CCAA is a registered charity and provides a Support Network for children with arthritis and their families. We aim to give practical help and support through our Network and Area Family Contacts, and to provide various educational and recreational opportunities for the children with JIA and their families. We aim to achieve this in a variety of ways:

  • Regular news updates, including information about the charity, various events and many aspects about JIA, e.g. suggested treatments, information about drugs, etc.
  • Support network. This is led by parents for parents in whatever way they wish. In some areas it is telephone contact, some areas meet regularly and some areas arrange trips for the children and fund-raising events.
  • Yearly family weekend to provide information, advice and support to the whole family, as well as a great deal of fun.
  • Increase general awareness of JIA, e.g. fund-raising events, promotional items and various conferences.
  • Many new projects developing concerning educational and social support.

The executive committee has a representation of parents and professionals, and due to this we feel there is a two-way sharing of knowledge and ideas which is of benefit to everyone. The charity is run purely on a voluntary basis, and our membership is open to anyone, and except for small administration costs all money goes into our various projects.

Contact a Family

The Lady Hoare Trust merged with another charity, Contact a Family, in December 2004.  Their team of fieldworkers, all with specialist knowledge of arthritis, transferred to the new charity.

The combined charity is now known as Contact a Family.  Contact a Family is a UK wide charity providing support, advice and information to any family with a disabled child, including any form of arthritis.

There are over 700,000 disabled children and young people in the UK.  Contact a Family's UK wide staff team can help them by:

  • putting families in touch with support groups or, where there isn't a group, as is the case with many very rare disorders, linking families directly.  This can be on a one-to-one basis as well as electronically through our linking website www.makingcontact.org
  • putting families in touch with specialist national or local voluntary organisations which can help, for example on adaptations and equipment which may be vital for a young person with arthritis.
  • giving medical information on any condition affecting children and young people.
  • advising on families' rights to benefits and tax credits through our specialist welfare rights project.
  • sending any one of our range of factsheets on subjects such as living without a diagnosis, a genetic condition in the family, booklets for grandparents, fathers and siblings as well as practical information about education rights, community care and holidays.
  • talking to families via an interpreter in over 100 languages if a language other than English is preferred.  Theye also give basic immigration advice.
